Home Organization: Room by Room Guide
Organization systems only work if they match how you actually live. Here is a room-by-room approach that prioritizes function over aesthetics.
Kitchen
Keep counters clear except for items you use daily. The coffee maker stays, the bread maker you use twice a year goes in a cabinet. Group items by function: all baking supplies together, all spices together, all cleaning supplies under the sink.
Bedroom
One in, one out rule for clothing. Every new item means an old item leaves. Seasonal rotation: store off-season clothes in vacuum bags under the bed. A small tray on the nightstand corrals phone, watch, and keys.
Bathroom
Vertical storage saves floor space. Over-the-door hooks, wall-mounted shelves, and shower caddies. Declutter products monthly. If you have not used it in six months, discard it.
Living Room
One basket or bin per family member for daily-use items. Remotes go in one designated spot. Cables bundled and hidden behind furniture. Magazines and books that pile up get a deadline: read within a month or donate.
Entryway
Hooks for keys and coats at the door. A shoe tray prevents dirt from spreading. A small bowl or tray for pocket items. Everything you need when leaving should be within arm’s reach of the door.
The Maintenance Rule
Spend ten minutes every evening putting things back where they belong. This single habit prevents the slow slide back into chaos.
